How to Prevent Dehydration from Sapping You Out This Summer

You’re supposed to be having fun in the summer. You and your friends should be out and about getting your tan, taking a dip, or playing rounds of beach volleyball.

But the summer heat can sap the energy out of you. It’s called dehydration, and it can interrupt your exciting plans. This condition usually starts with feeling dizzy and disoriented. Then, the next thing you know, you’re face-planted on the ground, wiped out by the sun’s heat.

Don’t let a lack of liquid ruin your summer fun. Know more about summer dehydration and how to prevent it from sapping out the fun in your summer.

Dehydration in Summer

When you’re having fun on a summer day, you sweat more than you normally would. Also, the heat can intensify as the day goes on—this and excessive sweating are the conditions needed for dehydration.

Severe summer dehydration can happen to us anytime on a hot day. Yet we think we need only a cold glass of fruit juice and sunscreen to keep the worst of it from catching us by surprise. But it won’t. That’s why you hear stories of people getting rushed to the emergency room.

Active people are also prone to severe dehydration because they lose hydrogen ions faster than inactive people. And if the loss of fluid is greater than your intake, you’re a hair strand away from severe dehydration.

Dehydration Risks

Dehydration is the root of all other risky conditions which can put your body in danger. Thus, it’s equally important to be aware of them to be best prepared for the worst-case scenario.

Heat Exhaustion

Heat exhaustion is a condition enabled by dehydration. Fluids in your body serve as temperature regulators; a lack of them will cause your body to absorb more heat in the environment than it can handle. If it becomes too hot and you don’t hydrate your body with enough fluid it needs, you will faint.

Low Blood Pressure

In most cases, a 90/60 mm Hg reading is a sign of low blood pressure, but this may vary for others. One cause of low blood pressure is the lack of fluid present in your body.

Dehydration decreases blood volume, the amount of fluid present in your blood vessels. And when there’s not enough fluid circulating, the oxygen and nutrients your organs need do not get delivered. This low blood volume leads to low blood pressure.

Life-Threatening Shock

Hypovolemic shock is the end game of dehydration. When the blood pressure becomes too low, your heart will be unable to pump enough blood to reach your vital organs, causing them to fail. As a result, you’ll go into shock: your heart will start beating rapidly, you’ll feel weak, and then you’ll faint.

Low-volume shock induced by dehydration is the most dangerous condition because it leads to liver, kidney, brain, or heart damage.

Levels of Dehydration Intensity

Most of us are not in the habit of drinking a lot of fluids, even on a hot summer day. We don’t even realize that our body is already dehydrated until we black out under the heat.

Preventing dehydration starts with knowing that it comes in levels. Know when you’re already dehydrated by spotting these dehydration levels.

  • Mild  — You have a dry mouth and feel slightly lightheaded. You can relieve this by going into the shade and drinking thirst-quenchers.
  • Moderate — You feel weak or faint. You haven’t drunk fluid for hours, or you’ve been out in the sun for too long. Replenish with lots of fluid, and stay out of the sun. Also, try getting some air flowing toward your face and body or taking a cool dip.
  • Severe — Fainting is a clear sign that your dehydration is severe. You’ll need to be in the hospital for intravenous hydration and examination for any internal organ damage.

The Siren Sounds of Dehydration

Dehydration is gradual, and you can spot it with several warning signs. If you notice these symptoms in yourself or anyone you know, take immediate action to prevent them from worsening.

  • Headache
  • Feeling confused and unable to function properly
  • Feeling fatigued
  • Lightheaded and dizzy
  • Have a dry mouth and feel the need to drink
  • A craving for something sweet
  • Not feeling hungry even if you haven’t eaten
  • Muscle cramps at different parts of the body
  • Feeling cold or getting chills
  • Constipated
  • Dark-colored pee

Preventing Dehydration During Summer

Drinking plenty of liquids is the only way to prevent dehydration. So be sure to drink the minimum your body requires to stay hydrated: two liters a day. It’s also important to drink fluids frequently, especially on a hot summer day.

Your urine is the best indicator of hydration. If you frequently urinate throughout the day, it’s a good sign that your body is getting the fluid it needs. You can also check your urine color. Ideally, it should be colorless. Otherwise, a pale yellow or straw color is still safe. If it’s any darker, you’ll have to hydrate.

If you are active, you have to double your hydration during summertime. Drink a lot of fluids that replenish the vitamins and nutrients your body loses from excessive sweating. You will require at least two to four liters’ worth of refreshment, but more would be better.
